The 5th BS Entertainment Produced Kizu
From the point of view of atmosphere and enjoyment the event was a success. Coinciding with the Imaike Festival was not such good luck, but probably not much overlap between the events. Mr. H and his family managed to take in both. The hemp awareness event across the street at This Is It was probably a bigger draw. All in all the Kizu All Star cast each showed their best work to date. TOPPA provided the opening back-drop DJing from his imac. For a guy with no money he sure has a nice computer...di-bit really got things off to the right start. For a while it looked as though he might be overshadowed by Uncle Bob's simultaneous OHP paper cutting performance which surprised the crowd who cheered spontaneously as Bob finished his first work of the evening.. di-bit, on the other hand had was determined to hold his own and drew spontaneous applause from the audience as he combined a kind of kung-fu dance with his break-core electronic sounds. S!G3W@R started off with a warm response to his 8-bit video game samples. His unusual costume added a new element to his routine. MazeruNaKiken was not as impressive as I had seen him outside Kanayama station, but was easily the most photographed performer of the evening. Travel Air on the other hand gave his best solo performance to date as agreed by both Mr.S and Mr.H. Very succinct. He built up the volume and feedback as masterfully as I have ever seen culminating in an absolute din. As the noise faded Mr.S got Shiva Hurricane going on a set that was scheduled for 30 minutes, but ended up being more like 45. The show was hopelessly behind schedule from this point on. Shiva got a warm response from the crowd with extended applause after the last song. Mr.H said that Shiva was the most fitting act for the venue's atmosphere. The sound at KD・Japon was great. The high vaulted ceiling. The PA mounted on a 'roll-cage' type rigging pointed at an angle where the wall and ceiling meet. The large amounts of wood mixed with concrete also add to the character. All of the performers were raving about the sound and the general atmosphere of the venue. The opportunity to have a sound rehearsal and time to set up equipment properly went a long way in getting a satisfying setting. Perhaps it's just nice to get out of the BL every once in a while. KD and BL, name similarities aside, have one common feature, though. Big windows. It's so refreshing to be at an event and be able to look outside and not feel your trapped in a black or white box. The second half got rolling with Suzuki Yoshito's Dobro/vocal stylings. The audience responded heartily and seemed to really get into every performance. As extremely diverse the collection of performers was the audience stayed right where they were. There were no mass-exoduses when digital went to organic or loud went to silent or vice versa. The modest audience may have been a disappointment from a business perspective, but their attention and respect to both the venue and the performers was worth more than gold. What a wonderful atmosphere of openness and sharing without the typical stereotypes usually associated with those words. Many enjoyed the second floor balcony for the clara performance. It was suggested that the performance might be well viewed from above as clara marked a course for himself on the floor with a thick black line and kept his head down for most of the performance. It was nicely timed, but unfortunately the only performance to be marked by a technical difficulty. The contact mic on clara's instrument failed to work. So much for the value of sound checks. Back down on the floor to see Shibata Rei drag herself across the KD concrete sipping water along the way and drooling it out on her right arm. This was the same arm that was bound by a white strap attached at the other end to a post on the balcony railing. Observers could clearly see the flesh above her wrist being squeezed tightly through the strap as she wound more and more of it around her arm as she created slack by moving toward the other end. A perfectly tedious performance that ended just in time. The same can't be said for the Concerto For DenDen Drums in The Game of Go. In a rather incredible match played by the entire audience white had only 3 stones left on the board and absolutely no territory after nearly 30 minutes of Go on a 9x9 (grid) board. The denden drums were complimented by Travel Air on guitar, TOPPA on itunes and Kita from Shiva Hurricane on one tabla drum. Though a little long winded, the audience seemed to enjoy 'arranging' the performance, some even eagerly anticipating their next turn, though others could be caught checking their mail between plays. The show ended an hour behind schedule. The rest of the night was spent at the Skylark family restaurant waiting for the first trains of the morning and topping off on some draft beers. |

--------------------------------------------- The 3rd BSE Produced Kizu 2004/06/24 The 6/24 BSE Produce Report has been slow to come. di-bit has been raving that it was a lot of fun and an interesting event. Gamelon Matamata didn't want to go on. I don't know if it was because the BL clientele scared them off, or the space was too small, or because of the seemingly mismatched line-up. Perhaps it was just TOPPA's jarring, disjointed 'break-core' DJing. Anyway, by the time Mr. S arrived the show was falling behind schedule as this night's drummer for Shiva Hurricane, Sawayan, had yet to show up. Determined to put things right. Mr.S decided that BSE wasn't going to fool around with stage-frightened acts. Especially since the night wasn't getting any younger. So Shiva went on as a three-piece with no drummer. Conveniently Sawayan showed up after the first song and was relenquished to the BL kit with no time to set up his own. It was a hot sweaty set that drew, of all things, applause from the audence who actually stuck around for the whole show.?Hikaru's odes to Buddha, Jesus, and Shiva seemed to find a chord with the audience - most of whom had come to see AimaiNaAtashiNoAi. Afterward Mr.S was showered with compliments refering to Jimmy Page and the amazing bass tones generated from his Yamaha SG2000 guitar. The Marshall JCM800 helped. Aimai was surprised to hear from Mr.S's MC announcement that they would be going on NEXT! The Gamelon Players were nowhere in sight, but they had been axed before Shiva even took the stage. After a brief interlude to get themselves together, which was filled by more TOPPA DJing (ASSMA, Oi, and S!G3W@R all three failed to turn up for DJing duty) Aimai treated the BL to the upbeat tunes of thier ukelele, shaker, bells and vocal duo. The room stayed quiet and allowed the ambient micing to do its job and joined in the final song with synchronized hand clappling. The set left everyone with a smile on thier face. Open mic had only one taker. Hitomi-chan of MujihiNa Pipe came to seek revenge for his sudden cancelation at the first BSE Produce Kizu. In fact he came prepared to do a rare MujihiNa Pipe performance with former collaborator, Lemon-chan (They're first performance together in more than a year and a half). Some prep time was required to get the act together and Wild Horses couldn't have kept Kayo and TOPPA off the stage. They were joined by Bekki's friend, the drummer -whose name escapes me now. MujihiNa Pipe showed that they hadn't missed a step. Hitomi-chan finished off the performance with a superb enka-styled song. Later he revealed that he's been doing this enka act once a month. Sawayan, meanwhile had been chatting with Aimai's Mai the whole time. They asked for, and of course recieved, stage time for an Aimai encore jam-session with Sawada on an African box drum. An audience member joined in on the kit and gave a superb performance during a meandering and light jam. Mr.S added low-gain electric guitar phrases (obviously inspired by some latent Jerry Garcia/ Juan Gordon flashbacks) and Ai also sat in front of a mic. A Shiva Hurricane - AimiNaAtashiNoAi super session of sorts it was. Satoru provided ever more masterly sound-board support for the vocals, percussion and ukelele. This 'super-session' took the event into early morning. By the time Mr.S ran through his medley of original numbers, Kasooth and Reunion, the clock had slid past 3am. Not bad for a show that sported only one Dj and was supposed to take off with a DJ battle from midnight. That's one enduring factor of BSE Produced Kizu. It's like a Pheonix rising from the ashes of mismanagement and derilect. What seems like a disaster somehow proves to be gold from lead. Thanks to Travel Air, who also performed, but seems to have been overshadowed by other drama.

2004/5/20 BSEntertainment Presents KIZU vol.2
It's a shame that I couldn't be there for the first half of the show, but apparently Yoshida set the tone for the evening with his distinctive vocal stylings and amusing lyrical statements. CIA ACID PARTY made serious music and served coffee to stimulate thought and add an olfactory dimension to the performance. Travel Air gave the kind of performance Kizu Regular's have grown to expect from him. As I arrived all were acknowledging a fine set by TOPPA. Mazeru Na Kiken took the stage with renewed vigor after his triumph at Kanayama Station. Shibata Rei offered a truely sublime performance using her body, gum and a black marker to indicate...probably something that should be expressed first-hand by the artist in an interview. To me it was a kind of measurement of the physical space of one's body combined with directional indications, all of which pointed downward. Though it seems a bit crass to say so, I couldn't help but feel a sense of eroticism in the performance. Perhaps a feminist comment on the direction of the male gaze? The Kizu KyouSouKyoku started with a black stone placed by our new friend, Yumi, and Mazeru Na Kiken's drumming after much delay and rather feeble attempts at explaining the system. Regardless of the MC's skill, or lack thereof, all present at the BL were involved in the Concerto for Kizu. Numerous musical instruments were employed. A range of vocalization, a bouncing white monster and a photography performance completed the ensemble. The remaining audience members consecutively placed Go-stones on the Go-board. The final score indicating a black victory by half a point. A fine game by any standard. Thanks to Higashi(Auramine/ Asuka Temple), Mazeru Na Kiken, Ono (Gakusei Jikenshitu), Satoru (KizuOiBito), Non (Colorful Dot Man), Boneidol Takuya (Bone Idol/ Cosmic Energy), Hikaru (Shiva Hurricane), Yuusuke (Travel Air/ KizuOiBito), Lemmon (Same Line), Kayo (KizuOiBito), TOPPA, S!G3WAR, Mr.J (Mr Busaichedelic San), and Kita-san (Shiva Hurricane). It couldn't have been better. Thanks also to everyone who played both black and white stones and keep the memory of the perofmance in thier minds. Jiyu Jigen (open mic time) was offset a bit by some great DJing from S!G3WAR and TOPPA who then layed down a base for some free-form playing by those intent on getting some stage time before the last train. After the last train took it's chosen another group took the stage. Afterward talk of a new band featuring Soichi on bass, Yuusuke on guitar, Satoru on Clarinet and Mr.S on drums filtered about the BL and was later addressed directly at Skylark.
The after-hours jam-session at Skylark was far more than just killing time until the first train of the morning. The five-piece discussion group touched on all manner of subjects including: travel, music, philosophy, conceptual art, life-styles, food, Kizu, and various planning and scheming. The new band name seems to be 'the various kinds of light filling my head free beer brother band'. And with the sight of the morning sunrise the cycle is complete. Off to slumber I go.

2004/03/18 was pretty good. There were a LOT of people. Most left after the poetry of course, though. Many stuck around. Morning Set, the unit from Friday's club event, 'Mobile Suits', were there. I think we played with them a year ago or so. Digeridu, Darabuka (the name of the drum I think) and electronics group. There was a pretty cool session after Mazeru Na Kiken did his thing. Takeshi (Pe-Teng/ Rhythm Joint - regulars at the Kakuozan festival ) played the trap-set, I played bass, Nori (Morning Set) played darabuka, Asuka (Morning Set) played digeridu, Yuusuke (TravelAir /The I-wanna-kill-my-guitar-guy) played guitar, Mazeru Na Kiken played himself and Kayo took the stage midway through for some unusually powerfully delivered original poetry. Then after some DJ time by ASSMA I sat in on drums with TravelAir (Yuusuke) to finish off the night. There wasn't a strung string to be found.-->

2004/03/25 ---------- Rainy weather and accute bronchitis as well as a host of other ailments set Kizu in a mood once well known some 6 months back. Both TOPPA and Mr.G/R/B were down and out at thier respective homes. I arrived from work to find Kayo and company midway through thier set. Mazeru Na Kiken joining in on drums with Yuusuke Travel Air on guitar and Kayo's wind section of clarinet and tenor sax. Another powerfull performance combined with some delicate playing from the band. A really good group has formed. 'Session Time' is what appears on the schedule. That's good enough a band name for me.
I relieved S!G3W@R at the DJ booth for a few minutes before Mr.H and family arrived. Ikuina San from 'Shige Beer and A Thousand New Wives' was nowhere in sight. The defacto schedule declared Mr.BS up next so Mr.H and I plugged in as 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'' faded into 'Close To The Edge'. Mr.H came ready for serious business. I had to crank the Marshall up to 10 (this one doesn't go to 11) just to be heard over the onslaught from Mr.H's shiny new bass with both reflectors and effectors to match. -- The initial feeback opening broke into a wild wall of noise and then during a lull in the sonic hurricane the Led Zeppelin classic 'Rock and Roll' could be heard coming from my guitar, though I doubt anyone but Mr.H could have detected it. This sent the set into a reverse 1977 US tour encore-set-medley including 'Mune Ippai No Ai Wo' and 'Ano Ko ni Boogie Wo Sasete'. S!G3W@R followed with a Nintendo Famicom inspired DJ set during which Ikuina San finally showed up. Kizu, an ever evolving and forgiving event allowed for a second Busaichedelic set with Ikuina and myself on guitar and Yuusuke Travel Air on drums. It was a rather tentative set full of punky apathy, but finished on a high note with a medley of 'Louie Louie' and 'Wild Thing'. I've been wanting to do Louie Louie for weeks now. Thanks to Ikuina San I got my chance. DJ Yu Tsujimoto took the night out and is probably bashing the senses of the remaining Kizu crowd with his 'break-core' sounds even as I write this report.

2004/04/01 Kizu World Premier Satelite Broadcast! ... April Fool! "Session Time" was in full swing when I arrived. TOPPA was in the DJ booth adding atmospherics. beats, and scratches to the mix. The rest of the line up was the same as last week: Satoru, Hanneko, MazeruNa-san, and Yuusuke. I hate to spread nasty rumors, but you'd think they'd been practicing, or something! Kayo finished off the set with a lung blistering reading of her appologetic spoiled brat theme. TOPPA continued to DJ once the rest of the band left the stage to make room for The WEED WHACKER debut performance! 。。。 April Fool! It's Auramine/Guy Unit/Busaichedelic! I'd write something more eloquent about the first performance by this Nagoya Super Group, but the ringing in my ears has numbed what sense I had left in my brain. Let's just say it was a violent and exhausting set to play. Mr.G gave up the struggle toward the end, unable stand from physical exertion and utter confusion. Hiromi's voice wasn't in good condition and she retreated to her seat in the audience after only a few minutes. The last notes were squeezed out by Guy-san and Mokkyu as should be expected by the 'Guy Unit' veterans. 'Travel Air' played a 'hot' set, taking a hair-dryer to his poor Strat and ripping the tremolo springs from the back of it as he scraped it accross the BL floor. This week he incorporated the unorthadox use of a rhythm-box into his performance. A funky jam-session finale driven by BoneIdol Takuya's drumming closed out the night. Mr.S on slap-bass and MazeruNa-san joining Kayo on the mic. TOPPA, then Guy mellowed out the mood with late night DJ sets.

2004/04/08 Kizu Break Core DJ event never quite broke loose. The all DJ night was preceeded by that cutie Eri and her solo piano/vocal performance. Not to be out done, BoneIdol Takuya followed with a brief solo aguitar/vocal set. Then Kizu was honored with the world premier of "Super FeedBACKER", Misuzu's all-girl group. Thier 2 song set (1 encore) took the night past 10pm and TOPPA the first DJ of the night took the stage to fill time for "di-bit" to set up his sprawling gear all over the floor. After a brief overlap di-bit commenced to entertain the crowd for a good 50min. with his awkward, chirping, DJ-inspired electronica set. Mazeru Na Kiken, then ASSMA took over at the DJ booth as the clock quickly approached midnight and carriages were in grave danger of turning into pumpkins. The crowd thinned considerably. Travel Air gave us a typically ear-piercing set of psychedelic guitar over a kareoke backdrop. Anyone left (all 6 of us) were sure to take permanent ear damage with us as a momento of the evening. S!G3W@R treated us to an unusually subdued set completely devoid of any dancing. Mr.S mixed in with "Tomita" and proceeded to take the night into the wee hours testing the patience of even ASSMA and S!G3W@R, who left after the first hour.

2004/04/22 BSEntertainment Presents Kizu seemed to be a tremendous success. Mr.G's CIA Acid Party kicked off the evening to a nearly empty room, but all who heard agreed that he should have been playing in a cafe, not BL. Sakai from Noushintou said Mr.G looked smart with his laptop and gear, but happily realized Mr.G was just another simple fool once the performance started. Travel Air followed closely behind with a BL worthy performance. TOPPA spun for a mostly participant filled audience and Mazeru Na Kiken preached to the choir. By the time Kayo and company finished with an "I'm Sorry!" ending the crowd had filled out and Mr.S made it to BL from work. TOPPA got a chance to spin some more while we were trying to find So-ichi. Once he made it to the stage So-ichi gave the Kizu-esque performance BSEntertainment had hoped for. The audience seemed enthralled not only by his moving vocals, but also in anticipation of the seemingly random outbursts of humor, idiocy, and emotion that make and break the gravity of So-ichi's performance. BoneIdol Takuya's word was "hearty". The utter silence of the crowd made the mics for his vocals and acoustic guitar completely unnecessary. However, the amplification added just the right command and ambience to his sound that kept everyone focused. Kayo danced with a stuffed bunny at So-ichi's feet. Sakai said it was So-ichi's best performance to date. ASSMA had the important, but perhaps unenviable duty of spinning to set up Shige Beer and MMmMmmm. Like Busaichedelic, it's nearly impossible to distinguish the set-up from the actual perforance. This night the band was quite well behaved but gave a superbly disjointed screaming performance and managed not to break anything. In typical Shige fashion the band invaded the audience space by moving the guitar amps and drums right into the middle of the room. The overall atmosphere lead to heavy smoking and even heavier drinking.
S!G3W@R took the night out with some typical break-core chaos befitting the end of a Shige Beer performance and finished with a Death-Metal favorite by Carcass.
