The event was a tremendous success with Nanya's first floor seating filled to capacity by the "Imaike Regional Izakaya All-Stars" while the second floor saw continous service throughout the night.

The setlist may not be entirely accurate as Mr. F's set is lost to the ages. Since he and Mr.S played one song each on rotation for the whole evening, the song order is not really so important. Between every Mr. S track there was a Mr. F track.

Still, the order has been preserved as best as possible, though detailed notes were not taken during the performance. It was a great time and many people drank far too much, which is customary when such a group of pub regulars is put together all at once.

Mr. F played Uriah Heep (at least two songs from 'Look At Yourself') as well as some 1950s Frank Zappa, The Slits, the theme songs from 'Get Smart', 'Twilight Zone', 'Flipper', and 'Star Trek', The Monkeys, Herbie Mann covering The Rolling Stones, The Romantics, James Brown and a host of other tunes that I either didn't recognize or forgot.

Blasting Rod's first show went off pretty well, I'd say.

I'm a little slow in getting round to writing about it, so most of the vivid memories have left me. It was fun, at least. Once you're on stage with the lights in your eyes and people on the floor your energy level just goes way higher than normal.

So some parts of the show benefitted from this energy, while others rather went out of control due to it. The live performance wasn't as delicate as some of the rehearsal/demo recordings, but Blasting Rod isn't very delicate to begin with. Mostly the high energy gave fire to the performance. Mostly the singing was adversely effected by the higher energy levels of a live performance. This is the one area where Mr. S had hoped to keep his cool, but didn't always manage to do so.

A broken string (two of them!!) during the next to last song forced a change to Mr.S' former main, but now spare custom SG2000. He's been using the Guyatone Mosrite copy almost exclusively of late. Unfortunately, he forgot to change the high E string he broke during sound check and was forced to play without it, which was still easier than playing with two broken strings in the middle of the neck. In hindsight, leaving the last number out would have been more prudent. It HAS been left off the website recordings. Not only that, but for some reason the SG was tuned to itself, but in a completely different key from the rest of the band, so the end of the show disolved into a noise-fest, though a short one.

Overall, the performance was a success as far as debuts at The BL go.

The other bands:

MIO was really good. She played acoustic guitar and sang while sitting on a drum stool that seemed to be far too high for her. Mentioning this before the show, she replied that she liked to feel like she was teetering on the edge when she performed. She constantly toed the tuner that her guitar was going through before going into the PA. It was the closest her feet would come to the stage while sitting on the stool. This eventually caused some sound problems as she loosened the power jack inadvertently causing the sound to short out.

Her bare, honest stage presence was very endearing as a singer songwriter should be.Her candid talk about stage fright and fear of her guitar lent credence to her nervous performance.

Bone Idol played their usual brand of 'trance/punk'. It was a treat to hear some of the songs from their recently released CD for the first time live. BS Entertainment lent some English services to the group while they prepared their lyrics. I thought they were tight before, but it appears that they haven't reached their upper bound yet. Some new members certainly add to their longevity.

I was surprised to hear that I was the first person to recognize, or at least to comment on, the Bob Marley sampled rhythm track they used for the member introductions. It was cool, though playing over it revealed that they are a rock band, not a reggae band, as much as they may like it.

Another band was on the bill, but cancelled at the last minute.
