1:05 PM - Mr. S Celebration Day IVXVI Set List and Report
カテゴリー: Music
2008-05-31 19:04 or 19:06 at Nanya:
This set list is little more than a 'best guess' after the Bombay India material. At that point only brief moments of clarity have allowed Mr. S to piece together a rough estimate of what was played (and in what order) during the second half of the evening.
Mr. S (rockthing) took the anniversary of John Bonham's birthday as an opportunity to officially get back on the wagon in style. :-)
There were apparently no complaints. Mr. F and Nanya's Puyo-san made sure S got in his taxi and the driver had the correct address. After that it was little short of divine providence that Mr. S' and all his belongings made it into his apartment.
Though suffering a terrible hangover the next day, S is reportedly raring to go for the next Celebration Day.

1. The Train Kept A Rollin 2. I Can't Quit You Babe
It was a wonderful week of Heaven, but from tomorrow it will be back to Hell.
The week-long series of Japanese holidays commonly referred to as "Golden Week" which this year saw a four day weekend for many workers and even longer for others.
Tomorrow will be the day when most are forced to return to work.
Nohshintoh
played a great gig at KD Japon in Nagoya in support of Nisennenmondai who are on a tour in support of their latest CD release.
We got a decent recording of the Nohshintoh set and some crude videos are up on busaichedelictv.
The big news is that Nohshintoh is now on the Live Music Archive
If you have any recordings please feel free to upload them with the prefix "nst", or send them to busaichedelic.org and we'll put them up for you.
The start of Golden Week had a wonderful event held at the Kou Shou Ji Buddhist Temple near Yagoto Station in Nagoya. Yagoto No Mori No Haru Matsuri - Yagoto Wood Spring Festival. Our recording services were requested by Toshihiko Okumura who has put together a fine piano trio plus one, which features a reed man doubling on tenor and soprano.
Ariving early I recorded El Rena, an Andean Folk Music ensemble as I finalised the microphone placement and so on.
The stage was set at the edge of the temple wood, facing into the wood where a hillside formed a natural amphitheatre. Temporary benches had been installed for spectators.
After El Rena the temple master, Reverend Masaaki Umemura gave a 40 minute sermon on life and nature and then the Toshihiko Okumura Pianio Trio Plus One. The sound crew were having a tough day. First of all the mixing console was set up behind the stage, but something had gone terribly wrong between Reverend Umemura's stage and the beginning of the Okumura stage. This was evident then the Meijo University Broadcasting Club announcer introduced the group. The PA delivered a terrible distorted (the bad kind) and broken voice. The situation did not improve as all of the instruments, including several microphones on the drum kit, were going through the small sound system. Initially the problem seemed primarily due to the kick drum mic being overpowered, but it became apparent that the saxophone was also being distorted. The head sound engineer was frantically running up and down the hill trying to hear if the crew was solving the problem or not. It was pretty obvious they weren't. The sound did improve, but sudden loud bursts of distortion occasionally marred all subsequent performances.
Regardless of these technical problems, the weather was working hard to make us all forget about it and the bustling matsuri filled with families and elderly seemed to pay little heed to the noise. It was a shame, though, as Okumura's group played a good set.
Kaz', the blues and soul guitar duo that followed were cool, but the lap-steel guitars of the Palm Breeze Hawaiian group were a real treat. Unfortunately one member of the group had the sole responsibility of talking inaudibly over most of the nice instrumental introductions.
Finally the highlight of the afternoon was the Chukyo University Brass Band, or rather, Chukyo University Band of Symphony, as they had printed on the back of their wind-breakers. This group needed no amplification and were set up on the stairs at the temple gate. I didn't care so much for their repertoire, but their ensemble sound was great in the open air under blue skies and surrounded by trees and the old temple buildings. It was a very peaceful atmosphere.
Then to top off the Heavenly Golden Week we had the sakana021 produced Ryuu Kyuu Night at Club Rock'N'Roll on Cinco de Mayo, or in Japan, Children's day, formerly Boy's Day, the 5th of May.
This was a monstrous event, packing the little club for the wildly eclectic line up. On paper I thought the organisers were crazy, but it was a stroke of genius booking the pleasantly acoustic duo Ett, which features Sayuri Nishimoto on vocals, pianica and other noise makers and Kei of Flyline, ex Hanadensha on nylon string guitar with Nagoya's crazy freedom fighter dub shamen, Nohshintoh in support of the darlings of western Japan (Kansai) noise-rock hanatarashi (total retardation), hard core female duo of Afriranpo.
The crowd was fantastic, throwing their support behind each group with loud cheers and despite the packed house, allowing for a very intimate atmosphere.
Afriranpo looked as though they hadn't missed a beat during Oni's maternity hiatus. They played for nearly two hours complete with water spitting by Picachu and drum climbing and crowd surfing by Oni. The encore alone was over half an hour. They were able to get the whole audience sitting on the floor and quiet for an atmospheric ending draped in white sheets which they attempted to traverse the crowd under until they were torn apart.
We 'got it all on tape' as they say. In the case of Nohshintoh, literally direct to cassette master. Whether or not any of it will ever see the light of day depends on too many factors to make any predictions at this point. Rest assured, the Nohshintoh will be out there in some form as soon as we can get it together.
... as will some images, which will be appended later... have to pull some stills from the digi-cam vids.
With those memories it's time to relish the last days of Heaven and prepare for the headlong drop back to the Hell of work starting tomorrow.
http://www16.ocn.ne.jp/~niseuo
そのあと「あぶらなぶり」の二人と塚本駅前の居酒屋で遅くまで遊んでいた。「亜知屋」おというところ。usenで70年代初期パンクがだんだん流れた。Television, Tom Verlane, Ramones, Stooges, MC5, Dead Kennedys, Talking Headsなど。不思議なことは、最初に着いたときにVelvet Undergroundだった。全然違うという、けど、よく思ったら、かなりパンキッシュだな。音楽とかについて話は盛り上がりぱなしだった。
3:52 AM - Blasting Rod Report of Sorts (Zoo Station: 2008.03.22)
今の気分: ぐったり
Faded Green walked through the changes in a pico-second diagonally tanoshikatta after the fall Yan Jin Dragonfly Under Mountain Reunion
it was a fuzzy if not fazy evening of Blasting Rod at Zoo Station.
The set was described as "Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen having a fight in an elevator."
Sounds like an elevator I don’t wanna be in, but it seems the busaichedelic.org Blasting Rod succeeded in blowing a few minds even wihtout high-heeled sneakers.
It wasn’t quite the driving chariot as predicted, but the waning full moon seemed to hold a significant role.
The members of Neither/ Neither World who came from San Francisco were great and it turned out to be quite an intersting evening from the drony, sleepy, lost in spacey atmospheric to the glam pop stadium rock dubbed heavily in D&B.
Talk of the avant garde and the just plain weird

1:15 AM - Blasting Rod End of 2007 run

Blasting Rod played a run of shows leading up to the new year.
Posting about it in mid February is kind of lame, but better late than never.
1212 SF Hour at Nanya turned out to be a really tremendous show. Blasting Rod played two sets. The short opening set went something like this:
Improv 1259AO > Now I See (now up on our jukebox) > Diagonal (world premier) > Dragonfly Suzi Q / Green River
There was an interlude while DJ Mr. F entertained the crowd with his special selection of Frank Zappa records and anecdotes to match.
Blasting Rod's second set came together with some very nice interaction with the crowd, taking requests and engaging in some improvised interactive comedy. The intimate Nanya second floor setting couldn't have been more appropriate. The recording of the second set was lost due to premature power down of the recording device, so it lives on in the memories of the privileged few who could attend. The set looked something like this, but there are some missing pieces.
Loser > Improv 2 > Honky Jill (world premier cover of Nohshintoh's theme song) Reunion > Pico Second Time House of The Rising Sun (by request from the crowd) Sesshoku medley (including Happiness Is A Warm Gun) Rock and Roll
Mr. F followed with his Solo A Cappella Frank Zappa performance. This was the most fun I've had at a show in a very long time.. Mr. F's blend of Zappa classics performed in his 'at-home' style mixed with anecdotes and F's patented one-man comedy duo playing the straight man to his own comic. He takes the performance quite seriously, however and always feels he should improve, but he's definitely on to the right thing and if he changed it wouldn't be the same.
Then on the 14th of December Blasting Rod took part in a Bonenkai End of Year Party at the Hilton Hotel in Nagoya. This was a posh affair complete with chandeliers, a chocolate fountain fondu and all the sushi you could eat. Getting the set out of the way early left plenty of time to enjoy the perks and play spot the new half escort.
Finally, the Winter Solstice show at Cafe Parlwr featured an all acoustic set preceding Ryou Guy.
Improv 1 > Diagonal > Breakfast at 628 mph > Easter Egg > Honky Jill Dragonfly > Under Mountain > Working Class Hero
was the set.
This was a great way to wind down the year, especially since there were so many other things that should have been getting done. A lot of people came out not only for the music, but also the expansive marketplace at Ryou-Guy festival Volume 1. It turned out that Hiroki of Hiru was there selling records. He had some vintage Iron Maiden that was drawing a lot of attention, if not a lot of buyers.
March of 2008 is shaping up to be another busy month surrounding the Equinox. More on that later
Ryogai: Ryoko Ono and Guy-san's flute and acoustic guitar duo mimicry: Animation And Toy Piano Cuckoo: Mongolian traditional instrument duo Mr. Shiroki: Piano Singer
There was some major confusion about this gig. We'd thought that the event would be at KD Japon, but that was wrong which totally changed the image for the atmosphere and space.
Ryogai features the formidable Ryoko Ono on flute (rather than her usual alto-sax) and the legendary Guy-san on guitar and vocal. Ryoko recently has a myspace.
I guess Ono from Hiru is going to be participating in the vending and other festivities at Parlwr that will be part of the Festival.
On a side note, we've got our website working again. It was in a kind of state-of-suspended-animation for a while, check it out, there are details about Mr. G's recent vinyl-only release. Highly recommended. He's already fantasising over his Wire Magazine review.
This has been very slow coming, but I've just had too much going on. Mr. F kicked the night off as I was a bit late. I got back from Hiroshima, dropped off my travel gear and replaced it with my cds and a few records, but it was just one of those things where I was home and just couldn't get out the door, even though I really could have made it on time.
The list and my selection was hampered somewhat by the fact that I didn't bring the artwork for many of the CDs I brought which had been copied from my LPs. Mr. F also played a lot of music I don't know.
